SECRETARY DEVOS’S SCHOOL SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS HAVE NO PLACE IN OUR SCHOOLS

For immediate release

Newark, December 18 – The Education Law Center strongly opposes several key recommendations by the Federal Commission on School Safety released by the Trump administration today. Many of the recommendations are misguided and not supported by research, such as the proposal to rescind the Obama-era guidance on reducing racial disparities in discipline.

We staunchly oppose trading in the civil rights of our students in favor of packing our schools with police. Increasing the number of school-based arrests and treating our students like potential criminals, instead of children, will not make our schools safer, but instead will grease the skids in the school-to-prison pipeline. We must work to improve school cultures in a manner that does not treat the civil rights of students of color as a disposable luxury.

ELC will be working with our partners to make certain that these counter-productive recommendations never see the light of day in our nation’s public schools.
