JUSTICE GARY STEIN JOINS ELC BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The trustees and staff of Education Law Center welcome retired NJ Supreme Court Justice Gary Stein to the ELC Board of Trustees. Justice Stein, who served with distinction on New Jersey’s highest court from January 1985 to September 2002, joined the ELC Board in September.

Justice Stein, who is currently Special Counsel at the Hackensack-based law firm Pashman Stein, wrote more than 365 published opinions during his tenure on the Supreme Court, the sixth longest in the Court’s history.

Prior to joining the Court, Justice Stein was Director of the Governor’s Office of Policy and Planning from 1982 to 1985 under Governor Thomas Kean. His extensive resume includes serving as Paramus Borough Attorney and counsel to the New Jersey Election Law Revision Commission. He is a former counsel to the Teaneck Board of Adjustment, former chairperson of the Bergen County District Ethics Committee, and former chairperson of the Supreme Court Committee on Complementary Dispute Resolution.

“We are honored that Justice Stein has joined the ELC Board of Trustees,” said Jeff Venezia, ELC Board President. “He is among our state’s most distinguished lawyers. Throughout his career, Justice Stein has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of New Jersey’s most disadvantaged children.”

“Justice Stein, through his tenure on the NJ Supreme Court and in public service, brings a depth and breadth of experience that will be invaluable to advancing ELC’s core mission of ensuring all public school children access to equal educational opportunity, as is their right under law,” said ELC Trustee Gregory Little, senior partner at the White & Case law firm and one of the nation’s most experienced trial lawyers.

Currently, Justice Stein teaches election law and health care law as an adjunct professor at Rutgers Law School. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Drew University, Valley Hospital, and the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey.
