ELC’S NEWEST PUBLICATION PROVIDES ADVOCACY GUIDANCE FOR STUDENTS IN OUT-OF-HOME PLACEMENTS

Multiple Sponsors Make English and Spanish Versions of Manual Possible

With the recent publication of “The Educational Rights of Children in Foster Care and Other Out-of-Home Placements:  A Guide for Advocates,” Education Law Center has expanded its advocacy guide series to address the extremely vulnerable population of students who reside in foster care.

This much-needed manual was made possible through the work of ELC’s former Equal Justice Works fellow, Lauren Michaels, whose foster care project at ELC was sponsored by the law firm, Greenberg Traurig.

“While we were sorry to see the foster care project come to an end, critical information and guidance will now live on in the manual,” said ELC Senior Attorney, Elizabeth Athos. “Our goal will be to ensure that this valuable manual is widely distributed throughout the state to all parties who need to understand and advocate for the educational rights of children in New Jersey’s foster care system.”

The pro bono contributions of the Lowenstein Sandler law firm resulted in translation of the manual into Spanish, as well as the printing of bound copies of both the English and Spanish versions.
