- What Do We Do Now? Students’ Rights Are Civil Rights!
When: Thursday, January 16, 2-3 p.m. ET
Who: Catherine Lhamon, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education; Kevin Welner, ELC Board Chair and Executive Director of the National Education Policy Center; Robert Kim, Esq., ELC Executive Director; and additional ELC staff members.
What: The federal government plays a key role in the protection of public school students’ civil rights. That role is expected to be change significantly during the second Trump administration. We can anticipate efforts to shrink or even weaponize the federal Office for Civil Rights (OCR). There is legitimate and growing concern for immigrant and LGBTQ+ students, students who experience sexual harassment and violence, students with disabilities, English or multilingual learners, and students of color. Expanded school curriculum censorship, a federal private school voucher program, and turning away from racial diversity and school desegregation efforts, among other projected changes, are on the horizon. These concerns are very real, but so is the fightback. This webinar will feature Catherine Lhamon, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights and OCR chief in the U.S. Department of Education (in one of her final official public appearances for the Biden Administration), on civil rights concerns and accomplishments over the past four years. Ms. Lhamon will also engage with ELC’s Executive Director Robert Kim and ELC Board Chair and National Education Policy Center Director Kevin Welner on how states and advocates can work to protect students’ civil rights during Trump 2.0.
