Education Law Center, Through Our Public Funds Public Schools Anti-Voucher Campaign, Released the Following Statement on President Trump’s 1/29/25 Executive Order:

In the November election, three states had private school vouchers on the ballot, and all three overwhelmingly rejected them. Today, President Trump added to his spate of unacceptable executive orders one that forces harmful, unaccountable private school voucher programs on a nation that does not want or benefit from them. Public schools serve nine in 10 students across the country and depend on federal dollars to fund programs and supports to ensure all students, particularly those with the greatest needs, receive a high quality education. Diverting those funds to a small number of private school students, many of whom have never attended public school, would have the same negative effects that are all too familiar from state voucher programs: worse academic outcomes for students using vouchers; increased school segregation; discrimination by private schools against students with disabilities, LGBTQ+ students and families, and others; and fraud and waste of public dollars. The majority of the American public, across the political spectrum, fiercely supports their local public schools and opposes siphoning precious public funds to vouchers – particularly when public schools in many states and thousands of districts across the nation are already severely underfunded. Education Law Center and our allies will bring to bear every legal and advocacy tool available to stop the disastrous policies outlined in this Executive Order from seeing the light of day.
