2007-12 – In the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years, Maisto school districts received increased funding under the State’s Foundation Formula, enacted in early 2007. In 2010, the State froze funding, and in 2011 and 2012 made massive cuts, which eliminated the earlier increases.
2008 – Parents and children in 13 “small city” school districts across New York State filed a complaint asking the Court to order the State to comply with New York’s Constitution, which requires the State to provide all children the opportunity for a “sound basic education.” State defendant asked the Court to dismiss the case, initially known as Hussein v. State of New York.
2009 – Trial Court denied State’s motion.
2011 – Intermediate Appellate Court affirmed Trial Court decision.
2012 – Court of Appeals, New York State’s highest court, also affirmed Trial Court decision, allowing children in the eight districts now named in the lawsuit to present evidence on the resources deficiencies in their schools.
