NOTED EARLY EDUCATION EXPERT ELLEN FREDE JOINS ELC BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Education Law Center is proud to announce that Ellen Frede, Co-Director of the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER), has joined the organization’s Board of Trustees.

“I’m deeply honored to have been invited to join this impressive board and to work with the dedicated and capable team at ELC,” Dr. Frede said. “What their work has attained for the children of New Jersey and the nation has been exceptional. I’m eager for what more they will accomplish and excited to be a part of it.”

Dr. Frede has collaborated closely with ELC on the Abbott preschool program, a national model providing a high quality, full day program to all 3- and 4-year-olds in New Jersey’s urban communities.

Dr. Frede served as Assistant to the NJ Commissioner of Education in the Office of Early Childhood Education at the NJ Department of Education from 2002 to 2005. She led the effort to design and implement preschool programs in over 150 districts that brought together 450 childcare providers and Head Start agencies in a unified, high quality system. Under her guidance, NJ preschool enrollment grew from 20,000 to 50,000 children in three years.

Dr. Frede is a Research Professor at the Rutgers Graduate School of Education and NIEER co-director. NIEER conducts academic research to inform policy supporting high-quality early education.

She was previously the Senior Vice President of Early Learning, Research and Training at Acelero Learning, a Head Start grantee serving 5000 children in four states.

Recently, she was Deputy Director of Early Learning at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. At the Foundation, she led the effort to launch a national early learning strategy and collaborated with other foundations on coordinated and complementary funding strategies to advance access to high quality preschool across the states.

“We are honored Dr. Frede has joined the ELC Board of Trustees,” said Gregory Little, Board Chair. “She is a longtime friend and collaborator with an enormous wealth of knowledge about early education. She also brings a deep commitment to public education and improving academic outcomes, especially for the most vulnerable children.”
