ELC Guide The Right to Special Education in NJ Now Available in Spanish

In an effort to provide increased access to information about special education, the Education Law Center (ELC) publication, “The Right to Special Education in New Jersey: A Guide for Advocates,” has been translated into Spanish.

“The publication has helped countless parents and advocates navigate the complex special education system, and now it will be more accessible than ever,” said Ruth Lowenkron, ELC Senior Attorney.

The translation was facilitated by the law firm Skadden Arps. Well over a dozen employees of the firm, in multiple cities across the country, pitched in to create the Spanish version of the Guide, which runs over 100 pages with almost 700 footnotes.

Jenna Statfeld, a Skadden fellow at ELC, got the much needed translation off the ground by approaching Susan Butler Plum, Director of the Skadden Fellowship Foundation, and Eriko Nagao, Skadden Arps’ Pro Bono Administrative Coordinator, about ELC’s interest in reaching more Spanish-speaking families.

With Ms. Butler Plum’s support, Ms. Nagao organized a group of volunteers within the firm to take on the task of translating the Guide, which provides in-depth guidance about federal and state requirements in special education, practical information about the special education system, and additional advocacy resources.

“Having a Skadden fellow increases our ability to advocate for students with disabilities and their families,” said David G. Sciarra, ELC Executive Director, “and the valued connection to the Skadden Arps firm is helping improve special education in another important way.”
