Religious Charter School Declared Unconstitutional: A Webinar on the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s Recent Ruling
In June, the Oklahoma Supreme Court declared that a religious public charter school set to open in fall 2024 – the first in the country – would violate the state and federal constitutions, and blocked it from operating. The Court’s decision was issued in Drummond v. Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board, the Oklahoma Attorney General’s lawsuit challenging a state agency’s approval of the St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School.
Education Law Center and our co-sponsors hosted a webinar analyzing this historic ruling and discussing its implications for Oklahoma and the nation on Thursday, August 1, from 3-4 p.m. ET.
The webinar was moderated by ELC’s Executive Director, Bob Kim, and featured a panel including:
- Misty Bradley, Oklahoma Parent Legislative Action Committee (OKPLAC)
- Sarah Taitz, Americans United for Separation of Church and State
- Renita Thukral, National Alliance for Public Charter Schools
- Prof. Kevin Welner, University of Colorado-Boulder/National Education Policy Center
ELC – together with Americans United for Separation of Church and State, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Freedom from Religion Foundation – represents the plaintiffs as co-counsel in a separate lawsuit challenging the religious charter school, OKPLAC, Inc. v. Statewide Virtual Charter School Board. These co-counsel organizations are co-sponsoring the webinar, along with the National Education Association and numerous Oklahoma-based organizations: OKPLAC, Good Faith Media, Oklahoma Rural Schools Coalition, Oklahoma Education Needs/Donations, Oklahoma Appleseed, Congregation B’nai Emunah (Tulsa), Emanuel Synagogue (OKC), Interfaith Alliance of Oklahoma, and Oklahoma Faith Network.
