Research Evidence Against Dismantling the U.S. Education Department: How to Protect and Improve Programs for English Learners
| Federal support for English learners is currently under threat in the nation’s public schools. English learners have been and will continue to be directly affected by the Trump Administration’s attempts to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. English learners are targeted by executive orders that undermine students’ rights, the massive reduction in staff at key federal offices that support effective instruction and enforce civil rights, and a budget proposal that eliminates $890 million in federal funding for English Language Acquisition (Title III). The administration has provided no evidence that federal oversight has negatively impacted the American education system, and it is probable that sweeping budget cuts and staff reductions will cause significant harm to students. Join Education Law Center virtually on Monday, October 6, at 3 p.m. ET for a webinar entitled Research Evidence Against Dismantling the U.S. Education Department: How to Protect and Improve Programs for English Learners. Expert panelists will share information about the Department’s role in supporting English Learners, including: 1) the purpose and goals of Title III; 2) how these goals are supported by the Department through research, monitoring and evaluation; and 3) a review of the evidence on Title III’s effectiveness in improving English language instruction and student outcomes. The goal is to provide advocates and decisionmakers with persuasive arguments for policies that support English learners that are based on clear, actionable, research-based evidence. The webinar will be moderated by Education Law Center Research Director Dr. Danielle Farrie. Featured panelists include Montserrat Garibay, Former Assistant Deputy Secretary and Director of U.S. Dept. of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition; Dr. Megan Hopkins, Professor, University of California San Diego; Dr. Alyn Turner, Senior Research Director, Research for Action; and Dr. Cara Jackson, Founder, Evidence Use in Education. The event will conclude with an audience Q&A session.
