STATEMENT FROM ROBERT KIM, ESQ., EDUCATION LAW CENTER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Education Law Center believes all students deserve the opportunity to attend well-resourced and diverse schools, as both elements are critical to ensure equal educational opportunity. Today’s decision by the Supreme Court invalidating Harvard’s and UNC’s efforts to achieve diversity in higher education makes the second of these two goals more challenging for colleges and universities to attain. But the decision most certainly does not mean the nation’s schools cannot pursue equity and diversity. In fact, it is more incumbent than ever on schools to make sure students of all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds receive a fair shot to pursue their life goals and realize their full potential.
The decision does not affect the ability of public elementary and secondary schools to ensure equitable, welcoming, well-resourced, non-discriminatory, diverse and integrated learning environments. It is more important than ever that they do so to provide all students with the opportunity to pursue higher education if they so choose. ELC remains steadfast in our commitment to this vision of public education as the center of communities and the foundation of a multicultural and multiracial democratic society.
