School Desegregation
More than 70 years after Brown v. Board of Education, many students still attend schools that are segregated by race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Research shows that diverse, integrated schools improve educational outcomes and better prepare students to thrive in a diverse society., Yet segregation continues to limit educational opportunity.
ELC is committed to ensuring that all students have access to integrated, inclusive, and equitable public schools. Through litigation, research, policy advocacy, communications, and coalition building, we work to dismantle barriers to integration and advance equal educational opportunity.
Advocacy & Litigation
ELC is part of the legal team representing plaintiffs in Latino Action Network v. State of New Jersey, a statewide lawsuit challenging New Jersey’s system of racially and socioeconomically segregated public schools. The case argues that persistent segregation violates students’ rights under the New Jersey Constitution, including the guarantee of a “thorough and efficient” education, and seeks statewide remedies to expand access to integrated educational opportunities.
ELC also serves as co-counsel in Cruz-Guzman v. State of Minnesota, a landmark case seeking to ensure that Minnesota fulfills its constitutional obligation to provide all students with an adequate education in integrated learning environments.
ELC is a member of Brown’s Promise, a national coalition of civil rights organizations, researchers, and advocates working to advance school integration and fulfill the promise of Brown v. Board of Education through litigation, research, policy advocacy, and public engagement.
