Every day, Education Law Center receives numerous requests to represent students with disabilities whose parents or caretakers cannot afford to hire a lawyer. Because of limited resources, ELC staff cannot meet this demand for legal assistance. So we have enlisted a corps of attorneys in the private bar to fill the gap with pro bono representation.
We are again calling on New Jersey attorneys to join this important effort to ensure our students with disabilities receive the services they need and are entitled to under law.
On November 19, 2013, ELC, along with the Rutgers School of Law-Newark, Volunteer Lawyers for Justice, and Disability Rights New Jersey, is sponsoring a full-day training for lawyers interested in volunteering their time to advocate on behalf of students deprived of their right to special education services.
“The Nuts and Bolts of Representing Children in Special Education Matters” will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at Rutgers Law School, 123 Washington Street, Newark. The fee for the training is $125, but will be waived for attorneys who agree to represent at least one child in a special education matter. New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania CLE credits are also available to all attendees.
The program will prepare attorneys new to the field to handle a special education case from start to finish. Training topics include the right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE); what attorneys need to know about Educational Evaluations, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Due Process hearings; and Attorney’s Fees. The speakers are seasoned practitioners in the field who are affiliated with private firms, Rutgers Law School, Disability Rights New Jersey, and ELC.
“This is the perfect opportunity for attorneys to learn about special education law and to help indigent children with disabilities,” said Ruth Lowenkron, ELC Senior Attorney. “The training is hands-on, and a mentor will be assigned for each special education case taken.”
