UPDATED GUIDE TO TRANSITION PLANNING FOR NEW JERSEY STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES NOW AVAILABLE

Education Law Center’s Advocacy Guide Series

Education Law Center has released a revised, updated and expanded guide crucial to the rights of students with disabilities: “Transition Planning:  A Guide for Advocates.” 

The release is part of ELC’s series of “Know Your Rights” guides published to provide comprehensive information and tools for advocates to use in efforts to enforce the legal rights to education of public school students.

The updated Transition Planning Guide contains essential information for parents, caregivers and advocates working to secure a free, appropriate public education for students with disabilities that prepares them for productive and independent adult lives. The guide addresses the critical planning and services that must occur to help students with disabilities move successfully from school to the adult world, as required by federal law.

The updated guide sets forth the basics about transition planning, provides practical examples, and includes several appendices of valuable resources. The guide also incorporates information about the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act amendment to federal law, enacted after the first edition of the guide was published in 2011.

In addition to Transition Planning, ELC’s Advocacy Guide Series includes: The Right to Special Education, Understanding Public School Residency Requirements, Student Discipline Rights and Procedures, Education Rights of Homeless Students, and Education Rights of Children in Foster Care. ELC is currently at work, with attorney Matthew Stoloff, on a guide to address school bullying cases.
